Another month is over and it is time for me to once again round-up all of your firsts. I started this series of posts because I have a type of epilepsy that affects my short-term memory. Quite simply if I don’t write it down I forget it. I don’t want to forget the moments that have brought a smile to my face, those that pulled at my heart-strings and even those that left me wanting to rip my hair out in frustration.
For this particular post I have to combine your firsts for the months of October, November and December. Unfortunately I injured myself playing netball. It resulted in an operation on my knee. I find myself on crutches so we have been unable to get out and about as much as usual. I was bitterly disappointed I couldn’t get out in the snow with you. The downfall we had meant it was the first time you were able to go out and enjoy it. I doubt that anyone on crutches has ever remarked “yeeeeahhh snow!”. Luckily Daddy was able to take you out and about whilst I watched from the living room window. The experience was nowhere near as satisfying as joining in.
So Harry, here are all the firsts you got up to:
- Joined the library – in school you read a story that involved a little boy going to the library. The comment the teacher made in your reading diary was not about how well you read but how you didn’t know what a library was. Thus I felt a sense of shame. Therefore at the next available opportunity we visited one and signed you up. I joined as well.
- Played touch rugby – I use the term “played” very loosely! In its simplest form touch rugby is basically a big game of tick. What child doesn’t love playing tick? The skills bit you find a challenge. Mainly because you don’t listen. When it gets to your turn you completely make it up. I find it reassuring that it’s not just me you switch off from.
- Went trick or treating.
- Narrated in the school nativity – for weeks we had practiced and practiced and practiced the one line you had to say. Much to my relief you spoke loudly and slowly. However in my excitement I switched the damn video off half way through – DOH! Oh well, there is always next year. On a different note your singing was exceptional. You really threw yourself in to it and busted a few moves (not in the script) along the way. I expect it is the first time anyone has ever danced along to Little Donkey like you did.
- Went on a trip out with the school – a visit to the Theatre in Liverpool to see Lion King. As a result of my growing panic you were packed off with a note in your pocket containing your name and address and my contact number, and strict instructions to hold hands and not wander off. I didn’t relax all the time you were there. Thankfully my fear did not pass on to you and your first trip out was a complete success.
- Believed – the first time you truly believed in Santa. Consequently it was magical. When you woke to go to the toilet you were terrified that Santa would see you out of bed and not leave you any presents. I was told to tell him that you just went for a “quick” wee. So cute.
- Built a snowman
- Went sledging
- Had a snowball fight
***Note to self – before dressing child up in winter gear ensure you have checked they don’t need the toilet.
- Climbed a mountain – Moel Fammau might not actually be classed as mountain but for you it might as well have been Everest. As a family it is tradition that we go for a walk up Moel Fammau on Boxing Day. For the last few years I have been unable to because I was pregnant/you were a baby/I have been carrying a netball sporting injury (spot the pattern). This year Taid Bobby took you, and on your very first attempt you made it all the way to the top. No doubt motivated by the promise of a Milky Way and a cup of hot chocolate. Next day your “feet felt sprained”. I don’t doubt it.

This is a great idea to write down all of the firsts for our children month by month. I have memory books for my boys but actually writing them down in this way seems a lot better:) #anythinggoes

Oh how lovely to be keeping a diary like this, I don’t have epilepsy but I wish I’d started my blog earlier to capture more of the children’s early lives as there is so much I know I have forgotten.
